It will never be enough to free her completely of the growing fear that accompanies an endlessly ticking clock. Those childlike sleepovers, a quintessential image of careless youth, laughing until it physically pains you, seem to stop time momentarily. That last line echoes over and over again until the music entirely fades out, creating an eerie sense of sorts. The song builds up even more at the end, where it seems that all of her energy is going into the lyrics she’s singing now:
As she says, getting old is driving us crazy. They’re slipping away faster and faster, and life is getting more and more complicated and crazy. It’s as if Ella is attempting to recreate the feeling of her life and everything around her accelerating as she tries to hold onto those simple moments. The verses are sung slowly at first, and then they repeat with a much faster, frantic pace and tone. It’s still a familiar feeling of carelessness and youth. Something as small as a spilled drink while you and your friends’ favorite song is playing non stop because you can’t get enough of it is so raw – the scene she describes draws a sense of nostalgia out of the listener, even if they never had a drink spilled on them while “Lover’s Spit” by Broken Social Scene played. There’s something about these lyrics that truly capture a lot of my high school experience, and I think many can agree. They’re repetitive, and it seems to reflect the uncomplicated, adolescent life that the 16 year old is clinging to. Like I said, the lyrics of Ribs are simple. 16 year old Ella O’Connor managed to construct a perfect manifestation of what it means and what it feels like to grow up in a society that glorifies adolescence and youth with both her simple but deeply relatable lyrics and a sound that inspires reminiscence in this iconic song of hers. The song does indeed have a “coming of age movie” vibe to it, and it resonates with so many in our generation for a reason. A few months ago, the song inspired a trend on the app of people dancing with friends in the rain, or even simply lying on the ground in the pouring rain as the song played, attempting to live at least a moment as if they were the main character of a dramatic coming of age movie. The hashtag #RibsByLorde has 14.2 million views on the app, featuring videos that mostly share a common theme of teenagers and young adults sharing their own lament of their fading youth, sometimes even crying or pretending to cry in the videos. It is not a mistake that one of Lorde’s most popular songs, “Ribs,” from her first album, has become almost a staple on Tik Tok for many Gen Z teens, representing the whirlwind of emotions that accompanies coming of age.
